Korean Braised Potatoes

by MJ

Korean Braised Potatoes ( Gamja Jorim) is an easy side dish made with potatoes and few simple ingredients. It’s a popular dish served at restaurants and at home.

If you love potatoes, you’ll love this dish as it’s delicious and very easy to make. I used baby potatoes with the skin on but any variety of potatoes will work for this dish.

You can customize this recipe by adding onions, bell peppers, garlic, or add some Korean red pepper flakes for spice.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tablespoon oil
  • 1-1.5 lb potatoes, halved (baby potatoes) or cut into bite sized pieces (larger potatoes)
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 Tablespoons honey, corn syrup or brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional)
  • Sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

Heat oil in a skillet. Add the potatoes and sauté for about 5 minutes, or until slightly browned.

In a measuring cup, add water, soy sauce, and honey. Pour into the potatoes and bring to a boil. Cook on medium heat for about 10 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and liquid has evaporated, stirring often.

You can cover with a lid for the potatoes to cook faster. (Time will depend on the type and size of potatoes used.)

Stir in sesame oil and sesame seeds can cook for about a minute.

Notes

Serve warm or cold and can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days
