This simplified version of fried rice will become one of your favorites. It’s super easy to make using ingredients you have on hand and great for those lazy days when you don’t feel like cooking. While the recipe was made in a rice cooker, it can easily be made on the stove top.
To make this easy version of fried rice:
Rinse white or brown rice and add your usual amount of rice and water to the rice cooker (or pot for stove top). I used short grain white rice with 1:1 ratio of rice to water.
Top with your favorite ingredients or seasonings. I added a mix of frozen vegetables I needed to use up, along with ham, garlic, onion, soy sauce and black pepper. Feel free to add your favorite vegetables or omit meat for a vegetarian option.
Cook the rice how you normally cook rice, using a rice cooker or stove top. Once the rice is cooked, mix everything together and add seasonings such as soy sauce, sesame oil, salt and pepper to taste. I also topped with a fried egg, Korean Chili Oil, green onions, and sesame seeds.
Here are some other options:
- Substitute water with broth
- Add a tablespoon of butter
- Add other vegetables such as potatoes, tomato, bok choy, broccoli, etc.
- Add chorizo or sausage or omit meat for a vegetarian / vegan option
To serve rice in a dome shape: Firmly pack the rice into a small bowl. Invert a serving plate over the rice and holding the top of the plate with one hand, while holding the bottom of the bowl with your other hand, flip the bowl over.
Rinse the rice a few times until the water runs clear. Add the rice to the rice cooker ( or pot), along with water. Add garlic, onion, and 1 Tablespoon of soy sauce and mix together. Add vegetables or meat on top of the rice but don’t mix. Close the lid and select the normal setting you use to cook rice. (Or cook the rice on the stove top). Once cooked, gently stir all the ingredients together and stir in soy sauce, sesame oil, salt and pepper to taste. Add your favorite toppings and enjoy!Ingredients
